In Palo Alto: Songs of the Civil War

The Congregational Oratorio Society, conducted by Gregory Wait, performs songs that were popular during the American Civil War or that are based on poetry written during the war. The concert includes

• Popular songs from the Civil War period by Stephen Foster, Julia Ward Howe, William Steffe, George Root, Louis Lambert, and others
• “A Procession Winding Around Me” -- poetry of Walt Whitman set to music by Jeffrey Van
• Selections from “Songs of the Slave” by Kirke Mechem

Soloists are

• Charles Ferguson, guitar
• Stan Neff, baritone
• Joe Guthrie, piano

An ice cream social follows the concert.

The concert takes place on Sunday, June 7, at 3:00 PM, at the First Congregational Church of Palo Alto, 1985 Louis Road (at Embarcadero), Palo Alto.

Tickets are $15 general/$10 student and senior.
