Accused Cleaver Attacker Pleads Not Guilty

Chunren Chen, 62, arraigned on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated mayhem.

A man accused of brutally attacking a co-worker with a meat cleaver in a Palo Alto restaurant was arraigned Monday, pleading not guilty to three counts related to the assault.

Chunren Chen, 62, appeared nervous as he was escorted into the Palo Alto Courthouse to face charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated mayhem.

Chen allegedly attacked co-worker Zezhong Yang at Jade Palace Restaurant on May 27 of 2009.

Chen pleaded not guilty Monday to all three charges.

A trial date was scheduled for November 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Santa Clara Superior Court.
