Theatreworks Silicon Valley Hosts Immersive Summer Camp for 8-12th Grade Students Seeking Performing Arts Experience
Teens may be bitten by all kinds of bugs this summer -- but if it's the Theatre Bug, there's an ideal place to receive treatment.

Peninsula teens seeking adventure and a chance to work with professional playwrights, actors, and directors to hone their performing arts skills can participate in theTheatreWorks Silicon Valley Summer Studio Program for 8-12th grade students. With guidance from renowned performing arts faculty, students will spend four weeks writing, staging, and performing an original piece of theater in a highly interactive, professional environment. “Whether they aspire to be a playwright, director, or an actor, the TheatreWorks Summer Studio Program provides each child a unique opportunity to understand the professional world of the performing arts, as well as a stage to shine on,” says TheatreWorks Silicon Valley Director of Education Amy Cole-Farrell.
In this immersive program, students receive direction by a faculty of professional actors, directors, and playwrights as they spend four weeks adapting a classic play with a modern twist. Participants will be exposed to all aspects of theatrical production including audition techniques, costume design, ensemble, song and dance numbers, dramaturgy, and more. The program meets 10am-4pm,July 18-August 12 at TheatreWorks Silicon Valleyand Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto. There is also free extended care from 8am-10am, and 4pm-6pm available.
Summer Studio is designed for teens interested in a college education or professional career in theatre. Students will learn and develop their production with professionals at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’srehearsal studios and then move for its final week to stage their original piece at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto. There will be two performances open to the public on August 10 and August 11 at 7pm.

With some 100,000 patrons per year, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley has captured a national reputation for artistic innovation and integrity, often presenting Bay Area theatregoers with their first look at acclaimed musicals, comedies, and dramas, directed by award-winning local and guest directors, and performed by professional actors cast locally and from across the country. A home for artists developing new works, it was at TheatreWorks thatMemphis, the 2010 Tony Award-winning musical that played on Broadway for three years before embarking on a 19 month national tour, was first workshopped and received its world premiere. It is recently concluded an extended run on London’s West End, where it captured two Olivier Awards.
