An apparently suicidal woman came off an oceanfront cliff at Pelican Cove Park in Rancho Palos Verdes tonight after about four hours of persuading from sheriff's deputies.

Authorities received a call at 4:20 p.m. that the woman was about 100 feet down the cliff near the 6600 block of Palos Verdes Drive South, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Keith Mora said.

The woman became cold about 8:20 p.m. and cooperated with her rescuers. County firefighters used repelling techniques to bring her up. She was taken into custody for a mental evaluation, sheriff's Lt. John Wolak said.

A crisis team attempted to get the woman out of harm's way, Sgt. Jacqueline Luna of the sheriff's Lomita Station said.
