Man Injured in Lomita Deputy-Involved Shooting Shot at Officers: Sheriff

The man got out of the car while holding a handgun and ran into a liquor store from where he emerged seconds later and fired at deputies.

LOMITA, CA — A 30-year-old man shot by sheriff's deputies in Lomita after he fired several shots at them following a short pursuit is expected to survive his wounds, authorities said Friday.

The incident began at 6:11 p.m. Thursday when Lomita Station deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for traffic violations but the driver kept going, said Deputy Lisa Jansen of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

During the short pursuit, the driver entered the parking lot of a business in the 2400 block of Pacific Coast Highway where he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked car, Jansen said.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for multiple gunshot wounds, according to Jansen. The deputies who responded were not injured, she added.

A second suspect, a 31-year-old woman, was detained after she ran from the car, Jansen said.

The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.
