RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Local businesses in Rancho Palos Verdes will soon have access to free security assessments, crime prevention advice and assistance with after-hours trespassing under a new city program expected to launch by the end of the year.

The initiative, called RPVBiz, is being developed by the city's Public Safety Division in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lomita Station. Modeled on Neighborhood Watch, the program aims to strengthen cooperation between business owners and law enforcement while helping businesses protect their properties.

The city announced the initiative following its Oct. 20 City Council meeting, and spokesperson Megan Barnes confirmed to Patch that participation will be free, with a launch anticipated by the end of 2026.

Participating businesses will be offered walkthroughs with sheriff's deputies to identify areas vulnerable to theft, along with practical security recommendations and crime prevention tips. The program will also include regular meetings and updates on local crime trends.

Another feature will allow business owners to sign a letter of agency authorizing sheriff's deputies to enforce trespassing laws after hours, even when the owner is not on the premises.

Enrollment will likely be handled through a form on the city's website, although the registration process has not yet been finalized.

Barnes said the city plans to reach out directly to business owners and work with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce to encourage participation.

RPVBiz will be led by the public safety manager and senior administrative analyst within the city's new Public Safety Division, which was established to supplement existing Sheriff's Department services.

The division is already working with the Lomita Station to monitor crime trends, coordinate targeted traffic enforcement, manage road closures and oversee public safety operations during demonstrations, according to the city's Oct. 21 council meeting highlights.

An exact launch date has not yet been announced.
