No Plans to Close Local Albertsons Stores

More than 900 Albertsons stores across the country—including two in San Pedro near the border of Rancho Palos Verdes—change hands in a $3.3 billion deal.

There are no plans to close the Albertsons stores in San Pedro near the Rancho Palos Verdes border, despite Albertson's LLC's payment of $100 million and assumption of $3.2 billion in debt when it completed the purchase of the grocery chain from Supervalu Inc. on Thursday.

The chain, which employs 15,000 people in Southern California, will keep all 192 stores and two regional distribution centers in the region open, the Daily Breeze reported Friday.

Albertson's LLC announced its intention to purchase 877 stores—including Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Star Market and Sav-On stores—from Supervalu in January. Supervalue had purchased those stores in 2006, according to KTVB.

Supervalu's sale of the stores comes after financial difficulties. In June 2012, the grocery chain laid off up to 2,500 employees, and in September, the company announced plans to close 19 of its under-performing stores in Southern California.

The San Pedro Albertsons stores near the Rancho Palos Verdes border are located at 1636 W. 25th St. and 28090 S. Western Ave.
