Palos Verdes Estates Police Chief Retires After 27 Years

During his time with PVEPD, Chief Tony Best served in many positions before retiring at the end of 2022.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CA — After 27 years of service for the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department Police Chief Tony Best retired at the end of 2022, the department announced Thursday.

During his time with PVEPD, Best served as the department's first motorcycle officer, a canine handler, range master, training sergeant, patrol division commander and police chief. His retirement was celebrated at the Palos Verdes Gold Club officials said.

"He will be missed by many and we wish him well!" PVEPD said.

Following Best's retirement, PVEPD announced Luke Hellinga will serve as acting chief of police. Hellinga has been with the police department since 2001 according to PVEPD.

"Luke’s leadership, experience and deep understanding of the community will serve the department and the community well!" PVEPD said.
