Palos Verdes Power Outages Spanning Decades Prompt Questions For SCE

Southern California Edison will present a report regarding frequent power outages in the Grandview Estates neighborhood traced to the 1970s.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Frequent power outages in the Grandview Estates neighborhood spanning decades raised concerns of city officials and prompted them to ask Southern California Edison to explain why the outages continue to occur at an upcoming meeting.

According to city officials, unconfirmed reports of outages can be traced back to the 1970s and have long been concerns for residents. A series of heat-related power outages in 2020 alerted city officials to the problem and, more recently, frequent storms have exacerbated the problem.

"Extreme weather over the past few months has once again resulted in extended power outages, lasting up to two days, in the Grandview Estates neighborhood," officials said in a staff report. "The City received numerous calls and emails from the area residents, once again, expressing frustration and dissatisfaction with the unreliable power supply."

City officials met with members of the community in the Grandview Estates neighborhood on March 23 where more than 30 residents shared their grievances with the city about the power supply. Many reported concerns about the health of elderly customers who rely on operable medical devices.

SCE representatives will present a report on April 4 about the recurring power outages in the neighborhood where city officials will ask the power company to develop a short-term and long-term action plan.
