Police Name Suspect Shot By Officer in Harbor City

Police caught up with the attempted murder suspect after a foot pursuit through a gated community.

Authorities today released the name of an attempted murder suspect who was shot and wounded by Torrance police in the Harbor City area of Los Angeles.

No officers were injured in the shooting of 32-year-old Lomita resident Jason Giovacchini, which occurred about 11:35 a.m. Wednesday near 254th Street and Vermont Avenue, about a mile southeast of Torrance.

Torrance police Sgt. Paul Kranke said Torrance officers attempted to make a traffic stop when they spotted the parolee, but he took off, triggering a short pursuit.

Giovacchini got out of the vehicle and was running into a gated housing community when the officer-involved shooting occurred, Kranke said. Independent witnesses saw the suspect armed with a gun and a firearm was recovered at the scene, the sergeant said.

Giovacchini had been wanted for an attempted murder that occurred in Torrance “several weeks ago,” in which the victim escaped injury, the sergeant said. He had no other details of that crime.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening injuries, Kranke said.

Kranke said Giovacchini’s female passenger complained of pain and was also taken to a medical center to be checked out, but was expected to be OK.
