Rancho PV Residents the Targets of Multiple Scammers, City Says

A resident recently received a call from someone claiming to be from "city of Rancho Palos Verdes Civil Engineering." Not so.

From the city of Rancho Palos Verdes:

The city of Rancho Palos Verdes would like to alert residents to the fact that law enforcement officials continue to receive reports of callers claiming to be Internal Revenue Service agents, Southern California Edison workers, law enforcement and other government personnel telling victims they owe money for unpaid taxes, electric bills, warrants or bail for a family member.

Victims are told to put money on a pre-paid Green Dot, MasterCard or Visa card and provide the caller with the numbers on the back.

Please be advised that none of these agencies, including the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, ask for money on a pre-paid card.

An RPV resident recently reported receiving a call from someone representing themselves as being from “city of Rancho Palos Verdes Civil Engineering.” The caller was attempting to sell the resident plumbing upgrades and claiming these improvements were required by the city.
