Hermosa Beach Vigil For George Floyd Draws Hundreds

A vigil organized by a local student seeking to hold the South Bay accountable drew hundreds Tuesday to Hermosa Beach's Pier Plaza.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA — A vigil organized by a local student mourning the death of George Floyd and other black people killed by police drew about 300 people to Pier Plaza Tuesday evening, the Daily Breeze reported.

Billed as a Justice Vigil, the event was organized by Will Smith, a USC student from Hermosa Beach. Attendees held signs, delivered speeches and read the biographies of black people who died at the hands of police, including Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile, Tamir Rice and Michael Brown, according to the Daily Breeze.

The Hermosa Beach City Council, meeting nearby, paused their meeting to join the event.

Smith told the Daily Breeze that he organized the event in part to hold his white neighbors accountable.

“I want the South Bay community to empathize with the black community as much as possible,” he said.
