South Bay Boy A Finalist In 'America's Favorite Student' Competition

A South Bay student has a chance to be named "America's Favorite Student" by famed TV science show host Bill Nye.

Wyatt Schultz of Park Western Place Elementary in San Pedro is in the running for Nye’s “America’s Favorite Student” contest, with voting in the current round scheduled to conclude Thursday evening.

The winner will get an article in Reader’s Digest, a tour of The Planetary Society with Nye himself, and a $20,000 prize. Wyatt said that if he wins, he wants to donate the money back to Park Western.

Wyatt, according to his parents and teachers, is "curious, deeply observant and thinks outside the box." He also loves math, nature, bugs and science.

He also loves geology and has a "massive" collection of gemstones, many of which he has found or mined himself, according to his family.
