South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide July 18, 2019
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

My website has experienced tremendous growth the past year, particularly beyond the South Bay, and I receive frequent appeals from people outside the bubble asking me to include their events on the calendar and/or expand my coverage. I’ve had requests from Marina del Rey, Venice, Culver City, San Pedro, Long Beach and more. I politely explain that we apply geographic boundaries to define the South Bay. I know that many government agencies have a much broader description of the area, but when I created the website, I knew I could manage only a certain expanse. FYI, the boundaries are south of LAX, west of the 110 freeway, to the four cities on the Palos Verdes peninsula. (San Pedro, Wilmington and Long Beach are situated in San Pedro Bay.) You’ll have noticed that I’ve recently begun including events in Harbor City, for two reasons – Harbor City falls within my purview (west of the 110 freeway) and a member of a neighborhood group recently began sending me event information. There’s more than enough going on in the South Bay to keep those boundaries as they are. In the future, should I decide to cover another area, it will be via a separate website.

Torrance Art Museum presents a special of After-Hours ScreeningWar at a Distance today, Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. In 1991, when images of the Gulf War flooded the international media, it was virtually impossible to distinguish between real pictures and those generated on computer. This loss of bearings was to change forever our way of deciphering what we see. The image is no longer used only as testimony, but also as an indispensable link in a process of production and destruction. This is the central premise of War at a Distance, which continues the deconstruction of claims to visual objectivity Harun Farocki developed in his earlier work. With the help of archival and original material, Farocki sets out in effect to define the relationship between military strategy and industrial production and sheds light on how the technology of war finds applications in everyday life. This event is dependent upon a certain number of RSVPs. To reserve your place, email TAM Outreach Specialist Jason Jenn at JJenn@torranceca.gov. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.torranceartmuseum.com/. Torrance Art Museum is located at 3320 Civic Center Drive, Torrance, CA 90503.
