Rumor has it we’ll be experiencing some rain today and into Friday, but it should clear up by Saturday, which is perfect because there are several fun, outdoor events taking place this weekend! There’s the annual Armed Forces Day Celebration & Parade, a couple of big food and drink events on the hill, the Tour de Pier, and more. There are a number of events you need to register or sign up for, and if you don’t want to get shut out, you should get on that now!

Dave Williamson presents The Gundo Comedy Festival from Tuesday, May 14 through Sunday, May 19. The event features stand-up comedy, trivia, juggling, live podcast and more in multiple venues including the El Segundo Brewing Company, Purple Orchid Tiki Lounge, Old Town Music Hall, Flights Beer Bar, South Bay Customs, R6 Distillery, Brewport and other amazing locations. The Torrance Chamber of Commerce and Village Runner present the annual ###strong on Saturday, May 18 at Del Amo Fashion Center starting at 8 a.m. The event will feature split timers every mile, computerized finish times, water stations and sponsor refreshments. The El Segundo Fire Department is offering free-of-charge, hands on, CPR Certification Classes & Fire Station Open House on Saturday, May 18 starting at 8 a.m. The certifications are offered in three different sessions at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at El Segundo Fire Station No.1. In addition, the El Segundo Fire Station will open its doors to the community with station tours, complimentary refreshments, food and photo opportunities from 10 a.m. to noon. The Pregnancy Help Center presents the annual Walk for Life on Saturday, May 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. The easy 5K walk along the beach starts at Veterans Park in Redondo Beach and welcomes everyone in the community, including seniors and families with children and baby strollers. Each year hundreds of individuals and families participate to support the work of the Pregnancy Help Center, which has been providing free services to the South Bay for 42 years, including pregnancy, STI testing and ultrasound exams. The City of Torrance will pay tribute to the nation’s Armed Forces at the annual ###strong Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19. Scheduled events include military displays, concerts, and a 5K Run/ Walk in tribute to Louis Zamperini which is presented by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade will begin Saturday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m. The parade will proceed west along Torrance Boulevard, starting at Crenshaw Boulevard and ending at Madrona Avenue. The City highlights a different branch of service each year. This year the United States Navy will take center stage. Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar, Commander of the Navy Region Southwest, will be the Grand Marshal and lead the parade on Saturday. The annual Tour de Pier will take place on Sunday, May 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. This unique fundraising event brings one of the hottest indoor fitness activities – stationary cycling – to the gorgeous outdoors. The Tour de Pier includes four 50-minute sessions beginning at 9 a.m. 1,700 cyclists will be riding on 350 stationary bikes while overlooking the breathtaking Pacific Ocean. The area’s best instructors and celebrity guests will spin riders through four 50-minute sessions with energizing music and loads of excitement. Participants can ride solo for all four sessions or be a team captain and recruit up to three teammates to register and ride as a team. In addition to the cycling portion of the Tour de Pier, the event will include a Health & Fitness Expo with a number of fitness and health related sponsors and kid’s Fun Zone with games, activities and entertainment. The Manhattan Beach Police Officers’ Association in partnership with the American Red Cross and the family of Manhattan Beach Police Officer Mark Vasquez present the annual Memorial Event Blood Drive on Wednesday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Joslyn Center. Mark Vasquez joined Manhattan Beach Police Department in 2005 and worked in patrol until he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer, in 2007. Officer Vasquez’ battle against his cancer was valiant and at times, when he was able to return to work, he said he felt like Superman. His fellow officers quickly nicknamed Officer Vasquez “Superman” and held many fundraisers and events in support of their hero. However, the Manhattan Beach Police Department lost their Superman on May 15, 2011.
