South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide Pandemic Survival Guide April 9
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Last week we were considering ceasing publication of this Weekend Guide for the immediate future, but we received about a hundred emails requesting that we continue. The last thing we want to do is waste your time with repeat information, but our world is so topsy-turvy right now, I’ve been told receiving a weekly newsletter is a comfort. So, onward!
If you use the website on a regular basis, you may have noticed under the main menu, there is also a city menu. It’s pretty convenient if you just want to know what’s happening in a particular area of the South Bay. These days, all of the virtual and live stream events are happening in the ether, so there’s no reason to tag them to a particular city….. so I’ve decided to tag them to every city. It’s always surprised me how so many people stay in their bubble and never venture out and discover other parts of the South Bay…. that’s the reason I created the website! I’ve always held that every city in the South Bay has its specific charms – really, no two are alike – but viewed as a whole, the South Bay is a powerhouse. In tagging these virtual events to every city, I’m hoping it encourages more people to explore….. that is, when we’re allowed to venture out again.
As predicted, there are now several virtual and live stream events posted to the calendar. The only trouble is that most of them are being planned just a couple of days in advance, which poses a challenge since this Guide is issued once a week. As of now, there are a few virtual events planned for next week but there will be more announced and posted in the coming days. So I recommend checking the website calendar daily.
I’M SO INSPIRED BY HOW OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES CONTINUE TO GET MORE AND MORE CREATIVE!

The South Coast Botanic Garden – one of the few places still open to the public – will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 12 to allow the staff to spend time with their families at home. (That’s nice, but I had to laugh when I read that!) The Garden will reopen on Monday, April 13 and reservations will still be required for entry.
There has been some concern regarding the Dockweiler RV Quarantine Camp. Specifically, what happens to the homeless individuals housed there once they are released. I received the following update from the MBSAFE organization.
Good Morning ___________,
Thanks for your email. The individuals who have completed quarantine are not being released into the surrounding neighborhoods. The team at Dockweiler currently has a workflow in place that taps into the existing interim housing system to place those who can leave the site into a facility. Thus far, transportation has been coordinated with the receiving sites. The Department of Public Health is building this into the discharge planning at each quarantine/isolation site across the county. The Office of Emergency Management has also secured shuttle service contracts for the interim housing locations that do not provide transport. I hope you find this information to be helpful.
Regards,
Jennifer LaMarque, South Bay Deputy
Supervisor Janice Hahn, 4th District

AlertSB Joint Information Center Update as of April 4, 2020 – KEY MESSAGES
• Safer at Home Directive Still in Effect: With warm weather forecasted or Los Angeles, please remember the Safer At Home directives are still in effect including the closure of all beaches, parks, and trails in Los Angeles County. Please be aware that “behavioral fatigue” may set in, especially when it’s tempting to go outside. Help stem the spread of COVID-19 by remaining in your homes, unless it is absolutely necessary to leave in order to perform an essential function.
• Palos Verdes Estates Bluff Area Closure: The Palos Verdes Estates Bluff Areas will be closed starting April 4, 2020 at 7:30am between the roadway and cliff along Paseo Del Mar.
• Updated Infection Timeline: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) has revised the time period that a patient with COVID-19 is considered infectious to begin 48 hours before symptom onset (updated from the first day of symptom onset). This is based on new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
• Infected Party Notification Requirement: The recent Health Officer orders have been revised to require that individuals with presumed or confirmed COVID-19 notify all persons with whom they had close contact beginning 48 hours before their symptom onset.
• Face Covering Guidance: The CA Department of Public Health and the CDC recently indicated that wearing face coverings while out in public may help reduce the frequency of asymptomatic transmissions, particularly by those who do not yet know they are infected. They are therefore recommending that people use non-medical face coverings when completing essential tasks outside of the home. The LACDPH requests that residents wear homemade face coverings to protect the supply of medical facemasks for hospital workers and those in essential fields. The LACDPH emphasizes that whether you wear a face covering or not, it is extremely important to follow social distancing guidelines. Face coverings may increase risk if users reduce their use of strong defenses, such as physical distancing and frequent hand swashing, when using face coverings.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the lead agency for the COVID-19, is testing at the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach. These tests are free of charge. To determine eligibility and schedule a COVID-19 test, visit the website at https://lacovidprod.service-now.com/rrs.

The South Bay Show podcast will continue to keep the phones lines open for community members to share information (how do you think I found out about the toilet paper for sale at Bettolino?!?) and we encourage everyone to tune in for the latest local news. If you have information you’d like to share, call in to the show at 714-242-5288 every Thursday morning between 8 and 9 a.m. and we’ll get you on the air!
Notwithstanding our individual circumstances, we’re all in the same boat, and the best advice I’ve shared with my family and friends (if you’re not working from home) is don’t pay attention to the calendar. Who cares what day it is? The last thing you want to do is cross off each day waiting for the end of April. Chances are, this situation will continue for a couple of months and the last thing you want to do is wait with bated breath for a return to normal. Take it one day at a time.
Stay well, be safe and take care. #SouthBayStrong
