Teen Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting Outside Banning High School in Wilmington

Richard Tafoya, 18, a former student, was killed in the suspected gang shooting. Two other students were injured.

WILMINGTON, CA -- A person has been arrested in connection with a suspected gang-related shooting near Banning High School in Wilmington that left a young man dead and two other people wounded, authorities said Wednesday.

The gunfire was reported about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Broad Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Richard Tafoya, 18, died at a hospital, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Tafoya was a former student at the school, police said.

Information was not immediately available on the name or gender of the suspect, who is a juvenile, said LAPD Officer Sal Ramirez. No details on the arrest were immediately released.

Two teenage boys who are students at the school were taken to a hospital for treatment and were expected to survive, police said.

Tafoya's family members acknowledged that he was a gang member, ABC7 reported.
