The Heart of the Matter

So many sayings are associated with the heart.  Follow your heart.  Listen to your heart.  Heartache.  Heartbreak.

For a long time, science has told us that the heart is just a muscle.  A very important muscle, of course, one that pumps blood through our veins and keeps us alive.  And that is true.  But now we are learning that the heart does much, much more.  Science is finally catching up to what reiki practitioners have known for over a century – that the heart is much more than just a muscle.  The heart literally has its own brain that has a profound influence on our health and emotions.  It has an electromagnetic field that can be measured up to eight feet away.  This field not only affects our own health and emotions, it also interacts with those around us. The ancients knew this, which is why the heart became the symbol for love.  Many Eastern healers know this but Western Medicine has been slow to catch up.

For years, Western medicine has denounced healing touch therapies such as reiki because there was no scientific proof that they worked, despite thousands of anecdotal reports to the contrary.  But that is starting to change. We know now that the heart is the first organ formed when we are embryos.  Not the brain.  Doesn’t that tell you something? And in April of 2012, Consumer Reports affirmed the benefits of reiki in an article highlighting several studies, among them one from Yale (2010) that found when patients received a reiki treatment within 72 hours of a heart attack, they experienced improvements similar to those achieved with prescription beta-blockers and a study of clinically depressed patients that was published in the July/August 2004 journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, which found that after six weeks, those who had reiki treatments saw their symptoms improve compared with those who didn't. That difference remained intact a year later. Why is this?  Renowned cardiologist Dr. Mehmet Oz has stated that reiki is the most important alternative medicine today and often has a reiki practitioner in the operating room when doing heart transplants.  Because he knows that healing starts with the heart’s electromagnetic field.

So what does this mean to you?  Many of us have experienced increased stress lately. We find ourselves in a funk that can’t be explained.  We’ve gone to doctors who haven’t found anything wrong.  We changed our diets – gone paleo, gluten free, dairy free, avoided alcohol, added alcohol. Years of therapy and we’re still stuck. Nothing seems to work.  What’s wrong? We’ve been neglecting our heart.

Reiki is a healing method that focuses on your heart’s electromagnetic field.  It doesn’t ask why, it just goes in and smoothens the rough edges, raises our heart’s vibration to a place where we can begin to heal ourselves and to feel better. And feel better, we do.  So ask yourself, how’s your heart feeling today?  And wouldn’t you like it to feel better?
