LOS ANGELES, CA — A 56-year-old Duarte man was hailed as hero on Thursday after he intervened in a shooting that took place steps away from a World Cup party in Los Angeles.

Luis Romero was shot June 18 in Koreatown as hundreds of people gathered at Seoul International Park to attend the Mexico versus South Korea meet. Romero was at watch party with his son nearby when an armed man opened fire, The Los Angeles Times reported.

As crowds ran to safety, Duarte ran toward the gunman out of concern for people nearby where a family event was taking place with children present.

Romero was shot in the leg as he tried to disarm the suspect. Video obtained by the Los Angeles Times showed Romero bleeding profusely from his leg.

Andy Rodriguez, 19, is facing one felony count of assault with a firearm on a person and two special allegations of using a firearm during the commission of a felony and causing great bodily injury, according to the LA Times.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help support Romero's recovery.
