📰 News we're reading

1. Local dealership offers PCC auto techs the fast track to luxury (pcccourier.com) — Pasadena City College auto tech students will soon be able to apply for a new 12-week paid fellowship with Rusnak Auto Group, tied to its expanding Porsche operations in Pasadena. The program, starting winter 2027, is designed to give hands-on luxury-car experience, help students overcome the "no experience, no job" hurdle, and create clear pathways into high-wage apprentice technician roles locally.

2. First year students share first impressions of PCC (pcccourier.com) — New and returning students at Pasadena City College are sharing hopeful first impressions as the 2026–27 school year begins, praising the welcoming campus, quiet study spots, and support programs. Many first-years talk about nerves over workload and grades, but also ambitious goals to transfer to UCs, USC, or nearby Cal States, using PCC as a launchpad for higher degrees.

3. Secretive High-Security LA Landmark Will Open Free to the Public for Just Two Days (pulptastic.com) — Pasadena residents will get a rare chance to explore NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory during a free Explore JPL open house on October 10–11, though tickets are already scarce and released in waves. Visitors can tour historic mission control, see cutting-edge robotics and spacecraft models, and learn how this local landmark drives deep space exploration amid recent federal scrutiny over several staff deaths.

4. Center X: "Young Leaders" Program Reimagines City Planning - UCLA School of Education & Information Studies (ucla.edu) — Middle schoolers from Pasadena Unified spent ten days at Pasadena City College reimagining their city's future through UCLA's Young Leaders camp, tackling issues like homelessness, climate change, and housing equity. Using Pasadena's freeway history and Jackie Robinson's experiences as a lens, students built 3D models of fairer neighborhoods and heard from experts, including Rep. Judy Chu, about turning civic learning into real community leadership.

5. New app to provide California wildfire updates directly from local fire agencies (pasadenastarnews.com) — Pasadena residents may soon get real-time wildfire and evacuation updates directly from the Pasadena Fire Department through the new AwareCA app. The statewide tool, built with Cal Fire and other agencies, will let users track fires, closures, and aircraft on a map, aiming to cut misinformation and centralize trusted alerts for much of California's population.
