PASADENA, CA — Each October, the Mayfield Junior School of the Holy Child Jesus community in Pasadena turns compassion into action, raising awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Fourth-grade teacher Rebecca Seymour has led this tradition for more than two decades. Inspired by the loss of a beloved colleague, her commitment to honoring a life has grown into an annual opportunity for the entire school and the local community to support those affected by breast cancer.
This year, students, faculty and staff wore pink and denim for a Free Dress Day, and students raised additional funds through a sweet treat sale.
Student Council members helped collect donations and encouraged participation across campus. With guidance from Student Events and Activities Coordinator Lisa Byrne and Director of Technology and Innovation Erika Sears, they also shared daily announcements and supported educational activities.
Beyond fundraising, the campaign invited students to consider why giving matters, school officials said. Eighth graders reflected on how their choices can benefit others, connecting charitable giving with the school's commitment to service and care.
The campaign nearly set a school fundraising record, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society, organizers reported.
