PASADENA, CA — The Norton Simon Museum will present an exhibition centered on Edouard Manet's "The Execution of Maximilian," on loan from the National Gallery in London starting next week.
Officially titled "Making History: Manet's 'Execution of Maximilian' from the National Gallery, London," the exhibit is on view from Nov. 13 through March 1. The museum is pairing the painting with archival materials from the Getty Research Institute that documents the French occupation of Mexico in the 1860s.
Emily Talbot, the museum's vice president of collections and chief curator, said the exhibition explores how images influence public understanding of political events and collective memory.
"By bringing this extraordinary painting together with historical materials that document the French intervention in Mexico, we invite visitors to consider how history is constructed in visual form," Talbot said.
A free lecture by Talbot about the exhibition is set for Saturday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. in the museum's theater. While advance tickets for museum members are sold out, additional walk-up tickets open to the public will be released at 4 p.m. on the day of the program, event organizers said.
More information is on the museum's website.
The Norton Simon is at 411 W. Colorado Blvd.
