Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena: A piece of architectural history
As the name indicates, Bungalow Heaven is a neighborhood of bungalows, specifically those built during the early 20th century’s Arts and Crafts Movement. Today, it encompasses about 16 blocks in Pasadena and contains about 800 bungalows from the era. While there are grander homes to serve as an example of the Arts and Crafts era — such as The Gamble House — Bungalow Heaven prides itself on being the prime example of the style of homes everyday people bought and lived in during that time period.
Thrillist writes:
“This style reverberates not only in the area’s grand, tighbeless houses, but in the unified, verdant atmosphere of the neighborhood itself, with shade blanketing its streets thanks to the trees that line them, and immaculately manicured lawns throughout.”
Bungalow Heaven’s residents are fairly unified, too. They had to work together to earn the city’s Landmark District designation for the neighborhood — the first of its kind in Pasadena in 1989 — to preserve the historical significance of the area. Each year, they put on a Home Tour to showcase the Arts and Crafts bungalows. To learn more about Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena, visit the neighborhood association page.
