Free October Events at the Pasadena Senior Center

There is something for everyone in October at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St. You do not have to be a member to attend. Some events require advance reservations as noted.

A Toast to the Joys of Music – Tuesdays, Oct. 3 to 31, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tom Campbell will play guitar and sing songs in the Senior Center Lounge. Stop by and enjoy his covers of traditional country, country rock, blues, folk, gospel and classic rock originally made famous by Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Vince Gill, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones and many more.

Senior Driving Education and Resources – Thursday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. For many adults 65 and older, driving represents freedom. Learn about the possibilities of maintaining your driving independence, safety tips, how to prepare for a driving test, driver education resources for seniors and more. Presented by Tressa Thompson, senior driving ombudsman, California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Friday Movie Matinees – Fridays, Oct. 6, 13 and 20, at 1 p.m. Oct. 6: “Snatched” (2017, R) starring Goldie Hawn and Any Schumer. When her boyfriend dumps her the night before their exotic vacation, an impetuous young woman persuades her ultra-cautious mother to travel with her to paradise, with unexpected results. Oct. 13: “Paris Can Wait” (2016, PG) starring Diane Lane and Alec Baldwin. When her movie-producer husband is busy with work in Paris, his wife drives with his charming male business associate from the south of France to Paris, stopping for fine French cuisine in Provence along the way. Oct 20: “Casablanca” (1942, NR) starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. In Morocco during World War II, a cynical American expatriate encounters his former lover at his nightclub in Casablanca, a crossroads for spies, traitors, Nazis and the French Resistance.

LA Opera Talk: “Nabucco” – Monday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. An LA Opera community educator will take participants through “Nabucco,” the opera that catapulted Giuseppe Verdi to fame. The two daughters of Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco), warrior-king of Babylon, vie for the love of Ismaele, nephew of the King of Jerusalem, at a time when Nabucco invades Jerusalem, takes Israelites captive and keeps them in exile in Babylon.

Medicare Resource Fair and Lecture – Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Medicare open enrollment period is Nov. 1 to Dec. 15. Get the information you’ll need tomake informed decisions about the medical and prescription plans that are best for your needs. Representatives from a variety of health care plans will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about Medicare plans and services. At noon, a one-hour lecture about Medicare issues and upcoming changes for 2018 will be presented by the Center for Health Care Rights. The first 50 people who call 626-795-4331 to register will receive a free box lunch after the lecture.

What You Should Know About Shingles – Thursday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. One of every three people 60 and older will get shingles, and one of every six who do will experience severe pain. Learn about the long-term effects of shingles and what you can do to reduce your risk. Presented by New Wave Home Care.

Need a Metro TAP Card? – Thursday, Oct. 26, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The Metro Mobile Customer Center will provide senior reduced fare TAP cards to be used for discounted fares on any Metro transportation route in Los Angeles County, including buses and light rail. Applicants must be 62 or older and bring valid ID. Temporary cards will be issued that day so you can ride immediately until you receive your regular card. You can also load fares onto your temporary cards.

Watercolor Exhibition with Wine and Cheese Reception – Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. Studies show that creating art improves brain function. Pasadena Senior Center art students, from beginners to professionals, will display their works in watercolors and mixed media. Awards will be presented in recognition of excellence, and some of the works will be for sale. Hand-painted original greeting cards will be offered for a donation to the Pasadena Senior Center. Complimentary wine and cheese will be provided, and a harpist will perform. The exhibition will remain in place through December.
