The Gamble House in Pasadena celebrates 50 years as museum

The Gamble House in Pasadena will mark its 50th year serving as a museum with a series of activities later this month.

The house is Pasadena’s most notable example of the American Arts and Crafts architectural movement. In April, The Gamble House in Pasadena was included in a PBS special titled “10 Homes That Changed America.”

A public celebration is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at 4 Westmoreland Place, Pasadena. It will include self-paced tours of the Gamble House for $1 (to reflect 1966 prices), food trucks, family activities on the lawn sand more.

The house and furnishings were designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene in 1907 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company.

This year marks the 50th year since members of the Gamble family gifted The Gamble House to the City of Pasadena and the University of Southern California. They signed a formal gift agreement in January 1966. Currently, The Gamble House is owned by the city and operated by the university.

The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
