6-8 KNIFE EXPO 2015

Southern California’s oldest and finest knife show celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2015. Demonstrations and presentations will be featured all three days, including knife forging, knife grinding, rope cutting, wood carving and a professional knife sharpener. There will be presentations by David Yellowhorse and Wilde Bill Cody on Saturday, and a forging demonstration every day (weather permitting). Continuous daily raffles will offer hundreds of valuable prizes.

13-14 GLENDALE QUILT GUILD 2015 QUILT SHOW AND QUILTERS’ RETREAT

The 36th Annual Quilt Show features a wonderful display of quilts entered by guild members and non-members, with a large vendor mall and a shoppers’ rewards program that awards gift baskets of items donated by vendors. There are workshops on Friday and Saturday with classes for all skill levels. Children’s activities are available on Saturday. The guild show also gives away new sewing machines with drawings held daily. Complete and turn in the viewer’s choice ballot to be eligible to win. The “Home Is Where The Quilt Is” drawing will be held on Saturday.

25 EARVIN “MAGIC” JOHNSON, PRESENTED BY THE DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES

Earvin “Magic” Johnson has gone from basketball royalty to business mogul. He’s won an NCAA National Championship while at Michigan State, five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, three NBA Most Valuable Player awards, played in 12 NBA All-Star games and won an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Johnson has successfully parlayed his skills and tenacity on the court into the business world. He now runs a multi-million dollar empire, Magic Johnson Enterprises, which includes movie theaters, a multi-cultural media company, restaurants, athletic clubs, shopping malls and more. In 1994, he began his first year as the Los Angeles Lakers’ vice president, and in 2012, Johnson joined a partnership that purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. He has teamed up with a group that hopes to someday build a new stadium and bring an NFL team back to Los Angeles. He is chairman and founder of the Magic Johnson Foundation, which promotes HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programs, and is committed to improving the quality of life for people residing in urban communities. The story of Johnson and Larry Bird’s inspiring friendship and rivalry, “Magic & Bird” was presented on Broadway in 2012.

The 65th annual Los Angeles County Science Fair will showcase the talented work from 6th to 12th grade students from more than 150 area schools. Student and project registration is March 26. Student interviews with judging panels are on March 27 (closed to the public). Free, hands-on interactive exhibits and student projects will be on display. An awards program will be held March 28 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m.

Frederik Willem de Klerk served as president of South Africa from 1989 to 1994 and was instrumental in dismantling that country’s century-old systems of apartheid, despite the steadfast and often violent resistance from the country’s white leadership and populace. Under de Klerk’s leadership, Nelson Mandela was released from prison, and the formerly banned African national Congress was legalized. Both de Klerk and Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace price in 1993. He will share stories of his unlikely partnership with Nelson Mandela, how this union brought an end to apartheid and his hopes for the future.
