MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is running rampant due to widespread antibiotic use, as well as antibiotic soaps. You can easily contract it through shaking of hands, touching doorknobs, using equipment at a healthclub, and areas of high traffic.
It can be life threatening as the Staph bacteria is resistant to many antibiotics.
My first recommendation is wash your hands thoroughly and the "20 second rule" of dropping things and eating them is disposed of, especially at hospitals, healthclubs, gyms, airports, schools and hotels.
