PASADENA, CA — Pasadena police Thursday released body camera footage that captured the final moments of a gunman killed by officers in May.

The man, identified as Daniel Warren, had been terrorizing residents by donning a bullet-proof vest and standing outside yelling and waving a handgun and an automatic rifle. The video shows police repeatedly warning him to put down the gun before exchanging gunfire with him. Known as a critical incident report, the video contains disturbing imagery, but it's designed to help the community understand how and why officers resorted to lethal methods.

Warren died from at least one gunshot wound he sustained in the confrontation with police.

It started on May 17, when officers responded to a call of a man with a gun in the 1500 block of Glen Avenue near Howard Street, just east of the Foothill (210) Freeway, at 6:30 p.m. Once there they spotted the suspect standing in the yard of a home, wearing "a ballistic bullet proof vest and holding a firearm," according to the Pasadena Police Department.

Video from officers' body-worn cameras showed officers yelling at the suspect, who pointed a weapon at them, firing at least one shot and officers returning fire. Warren, then ran in between two homes, where officers located him and used non-lethal means in an attempt to get him to surrender, but he did not move from his location, police said.

Officers approached Warren and took him into custody, then began performing life-saving efforts, but he ultimately died from his injuries, the department said.

A rifle with a large capacity drum style magazine and handgun were found near Warren, police said.

No officers were injured.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office Officer Involved Shooting Team, and the Pasadena Police Department Professional Standards Detectives.

After the investigation is completed the Pasadena police chief will make a final determination whether the officers involved acted within department policy.
