Don't Reach For It: PPD 'Phone-At-The-Wheel' Crackdown

Petaluma police fanned out for operations targeting illegal phone use behind the wheel.

PETALUMA, CA — California law bars drivers from holding a phone or electronic device while driving, whether talking, texting or using apps.

Yet, Petaluma police cited nine drivers reaching for phones at stoplights, in traffic, and on the move during enforcement operations in April.

The crackdown was part of a broader campaign tied to National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Officers said the stops aimed to curb distracted driving linked to crashes and injuries.

“Despite repeated efforts to warn drivers about the hands-free cell phone law, some drivers continue to use their phones while operating a vehicle,” Officer Chris Ricci said in a statement on social media, adding the goal is to change behavior and make roads safer.

A handheld phone violation carries a fine, while a second conviction within 36 months can add a point to a driver’s record.
