It's That Time Again: Petaluma Students Back To School Includes New Superintendent

Petaluma students return Wednesday as Superintendent Davina Goldwasser begins her first school year leading the district.

PETALUMA, CA — Thousands of Petaluma students return to their classrooms Wednesday as new Superintendent Davina Goldwasser opens her first school year leading Petaluma City Schools.

Goldwasser began the job July 1 after the Board of Education approved her appointment in May. She previously worked as San Francisco Unified's assistant superintendent of high schools and college and career readiness.

The leadership transition gives families another reason to follow the Board of Education when trustees meet Aug. 18. Closed session begins at 5 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 6 p.m.

Some families will be on campus even sooner.

The Dual Language Immersion Academy scheduled its Back-to-School Night today from 5 to 6 p.m.

Grant Elementary follows Aug. 19 with a TK-2 Back-to-School Night from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m.

Families finishing their shopping have several choices without leaving Petaluma. Target is at 401 Kenilworth Drive, while Staples is at 207 S. McDowell Blvd.

Target currently advertises select 35-cent notebooks, 39-cent composition books, 50-cent folders and glue, 99-cent Crayola products, and other back-to-school offers through Sept. 19.

Petaluma Transit Updates For Back-To-School

Families looking for alternatives to driving can also use Petaluma Transit as students return to school.

The transit options also include Petaluma's recent pedestrian and bike-friendly Safe Routes to School and Safe Streets program.

Families who use transit should check current Petaluma Transit information before traveling for the latest bus, paratransit, and LumaGo service updates.

Tuesday, Aug. 11: Dual Language Immersion Academy Back-to-School Night, 5-6 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 12: First day of school on the traditional calendar.

Tuesday, Aug. 18: Board closed session, 5 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 18: Board of Education meeting, 6-9 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 19: Grant Elementary TK-2 Back-to-School Night, 4:45-5:45 p.m.

July 1: Superintendent Davina Goldwasser began leading Petaluma City Schools.
