A Dozen Eggs Cost Between $2 and $5
Brown, local and organic eggs from free-range birds tend to be more expensive

Eggs are good food and a perennial part of Easter. Around Piedmont they’re affordable, running about $2 to $5 for a dozen eggs, despite recent food inflation. Brown and organic eggs, and those that come from local and free-range birds, are more expensive, though virtually all eggs sold in the area are grade AA, the highest rating for egg quality offered by the United States Department of Agriculture.
At Lakeshore Produce at 3260 Lakeshore Ave. near Trader Joe’s, a dozen eggs from Petaluma Farms and Uncle Eddie’s Wild Hen Farm cost $2.99 each. Large eggs from the Rock Island brand are $3.49 for a dozen, and organic large brown eggs from Judy’s Family Farm are $4.49
Like Lakeshore Produce, Monte Vista Food Center at 4000 Piedmont Ave., is a small specialty grocery store specializing in organic produce. Monte Vista carries the Sonoma Valley brand of eggs, and they cost $2.49 for a dozen white eggs and $2.79 for a dozen brown. The Sonoma Valley extra-large, locally grown eggs are available for $2.99.

Down the street at 4038 Piedmont Ave., Piedmont Grocery offers a fairly large selection of eggs, starting in price with Petaluma Farms large eggs for $1.99. Petaluma Farms jumbo and extra-large eggs are both $2.79. Clover Stornetta Farms’ large cage-free brown eggs are $3.69 a dozen and Clover Organic Farms’ cage-free brown eggs are $4.99.
Judy’s Family Farm organic large eggs are $4.59 a dozen and Rock Island brown eggs, which are from hens raised “without cages” on a “100 percent vegetarian diet” are $3.19. The Judy’s, Rock Island, and Petaluma Farms eggs are all produced at the same Petaluma Egg Farm, according to its Web site http://www.petalumaeggfarm.com.

At Village Market at 5885 Broadway Terrace, a dozen eggs start at $2.79 for the Clover Stornetta Farms large and Santa Rosa Jumbo. Rock Island brown large are $3.49 and Judy’s Family Farm large organic are $4.49. Both Gold Circle Farms with DHA omega 3 and Clover with Omega 3 are priced at $4.29. Clover organic large brown are $4.79.
Safeway at 2096 Mountain Blvd. in Montclair Village stocks the Lucerne brand of eggs, ranging from $2.79 for the jumbo to $3.29 for the large brown eggs. It also offers a family pack of 18 eggs from Lucerne for $3.29 with a discount card. Eggland’s Best large eggs and Rock Island cage-free eggs are both $3.99 while Judy’s Family Farm organic are $4.79.
Lucky Supermarket at 1963 Mountain Blvd. in Montclair Village has perhaps the lowest price of grade AA eggs with its Sunnyside Farms brand, which was $1.89 for a dozen eggs, though the price was only valid through April 19. The cost is $2.69 for extra-large eggs and $3.59 for large brown eggs, both from Sunnyside Farms. Lucky also carries both Eggland’s Best cage-free brown, and Rock Island brown jumbo eggs for $3.39, and Judy’s Family Farm organic eggs for $5.19.
