City Fetes Homeowners, Architects and Contractors

The Piedmont Planning Commission Monday evening honored seven sets of homeowners and work crews with its Piedmont Design Awards for 2010.

“It honors the people who have lived through the dust and the inconvenience and the cost and the panic,” said Piedmont City Planner Kate Black. “The city gets to recognize the work they did, and to recognize the architects and landscape architects and contractors who got them there.” Black said the city has been honoring the best renovations since the late 1990s.

Bill Holland of Piedmont, architect on one of the award winners, a project on Bonita Avenue, said, “I had fantastic clients (Robin and David Sweet). They had a clear idea of what they wanted but not necessarily the form they wanted it to take. But they knew it when they saw it.”

The winners were:

• Best Second Unit, 110 Sunnyside Ave., for its respect for the property's historic architecture; Chris and Will Free; Igino Pellizzari and Syed Husain, architects; Carlos Gonzalez, contractor.
• Best Garage, 140 Monticello Ave., for its well integrated design; Karen Stanton and Tom Andreoni; Stefan Menzi, architect; Andreoni and Stanton Construction.
• Best Outdoor Living Area, 213 Bonita Ave., for its attractive deck and landscaping; David and Robin Sweet; Bill Holland, architect; Neil T. Guiney, contractor; Guadalupe Magana, Panoramic View Landscape.
• Best Second Story Addition, 407 Linda Ave., for its lovely design; Arleta Chang; Jarvis Architects; Zanderbuilt, contractor.
• Best Sustainable Remodel, 29 Sylvan Way, a complete remodel with a sustainable design; Daniel Harvitt and Lizabeth Willner; Richard Janzen, architect; Peter Hirano, contractor.
• Best Historic Remodel, 31 Jerome Ave., a beautiful renovation; Gary and Lesley Zalewski.
• Best Two-Story Rear Addition, 58 Lakeview Ave., Ryan and Nicki Gilbert; Gary Parsons, architect; Decade Construction; Leiber Landscape Services.
