Classical Indian Dancers Show Elementary School Students the Drama of Their Craft

Piedmont elementary school students were immersed in South Asian culture this week.

Each year the Piedmont Appreciating Diversity Committee collaborates with the tri-school principals to develop a week-long program of performances, art projects, sports games, music lessons, and library activities to celebrate cultures from one region of the world.

As part of this year's celebration, Beach, Havens and Wildwood schools were treated to a demonstration by two dancers from the Berkeley-based Kalanjali Dances of India studio on Wednesday, May 18.

The dancers performed the most ancient of India's classical dance styles, Bharatanatyam, which is more than 2000 years old. "Natyam" means dance, but also implies the inclusion of theater. The dance was often performed inside of temples as a way to entertain the gods.
