In celebration of Father's Day this month, my column is about dads.
I often walk in the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood where I frequently see young men with babies strapped to their chests in one kind of carrier or another, or pushing a stroller. Several times I've noticed, and who would not, a bicycling man pulling a trailer with a child in it behind him, making hs way up the Linda hill. A great fitness model for his kid, yes, and wonderful conditioning for his legs, but a terrific bonding experience for the two of them as well.
Of course some of these dads sre spending more time with their kid because they are working from home and have flexible schedules or because the woman of the house is away working, but whatever the reason, I see it as positive change. For so long, raising the children, changing the diapers, cooking the meals, was considered woman's work. Men who attempted these tasks were often depicted in movies and comic strips as inept buffoons. But circumstance and bravery have freed men and women of that rigidity now. The door has been opened to both genders to experience their full parenting potential.. It's a great model to provide for kids who come from those families and for the families of the future.
So thank you guys, for paving the way for your sons and daughters and scouting a path for coming generations. I salute you.
