My Fair Lady has been called the "perfect musical." Starting with George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy, Pygmalion, Lerner and Loewe wrote a musical that continues to entrance audiences more than 50 years after it opened. No one can forget the Cockney flower seller, Eliza Doolittle, and her journey up the social ladder via elocution lessons. Every song is a classic, and a number of them have transcended the world of musical theater and become popular standards, like "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live," and "Get Me To the Church On Time."
My Fair Lady opened in 1956, was nominated for 9 Tony awards, and won 6 of them, including Best Musical, Best Actor (Rex Harrison), and Best Director (Moss Hart.) It set what was then the record for the longest-running Broadway musical in history. It had a hit London production, a film version, and numerous revivals.
Locally, My Fair Lady got more votes than any other show when we polled Woodminster fans last fall. We hope you will enjoy our production!
