A great white shark begins to terrorize the beach resort of Amity just as the tourist season commences. As the body count mounts, the local police chief (Roy Scheider), a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a fisherman (Robert Shaw) may be the town's only hope. This was the film that scared the daylights out of every beach-goer in the summer of 1975. It was also the film that launched the career of a director named Steven Spielberg. Working from a script by Peter Benchley (author of the original novel), Spielberg crafted what is regarded as the very first "summer blockbuster". Horror film, monster movie, thrill ride, and suspense nailbiter all rolled into one, Jaws builds the tension from the very first scene (and the first victim) to the final climactic battle between the great white shark and the men who have vowed to end its reign of terror. Jaws won three Academy Awards including Oscars for Best Sound and Best Music. The original score by composer John Williams has become etched indelibly into our consciousness as a signal that something sinister this way comes.
