Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland welcomes renowned poet Sandra Gilbert to the store to read from and sign her new book, Aftermath, on Thursday, January 26th at 7pm.
The poems in Aftermath - alternately mournful, sardonic, and joyous - are about the grief that follows loss. Yet these poems aren't just about the consequences of loss, but also about the complex experiences of endurance, acquiescence, and rebirth that, with luck, mark the aftermath of sorrow. As Billy Collins says, "Sandra Gilbert's poems are beautifully situated at the intersection of craft and feeling."
Sandra Gilbert is the author of numerous volumes of criticism and poetry, including the highly-influential study The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the 19th-Century Literary Imagination, as well as the memoir Wrongful Death. She is co-editor, with Susan Gubar, of The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women. A Distinguished Professor of English emerita at UC Davis, she lives in Berkeley.
