Game Reports from Piedmont Baseball-Softball Foundation, April 30-May 6
A lively week with some especially strong pitching and defense

Weekly game results for Piedmont Baseball Foundation teams are listed below. Game information from coaches and team representatives should be submitted by Sunday at 8 p.m. at www.piedmontbaseball.org using the “Game Publicity” menu item. Results below are from games played last week.
SHETLAND
River Cats vs. Blue Claws
These long-time rivals hooked up on Saturday. It was an emotionally charged affair that ended tied. Players of the game were Brayden Day (with multiple big hits) for the Blue Claws, and Jaden Recker and Nate Hart for the River Cats.
PINTO
Piedmont Cubs 19, Orinda California Screamers 18
Shane Miller knocked in the winning run in a see-saw battle with the Orinda California Screamers. Andrew Dorman had 3 hits and several heads-up defensive plays to secure the win. Alex McLaughlan had a home run and scored 3 times. AJ Harris, Andrew Mendelsen, Michael Aikawa, JoJo Murphy and Ben Barnes had 3 hits each.
Piedmont Cubs 16, Orinda Honey Badgers 14
Owen Somerville had 3 hits and scored 3 runs while Ben Barnes, Charlie Jones and Sam Corcoran scored 2 runs apiece to lead the Cubs offense in a tight match against the Orinda Honey Badgers. Andrew Dorman, Andrew Mendolson and Owen Reilly had nice defensive plays to help seal the win.
Piedmont Cardinals 23, Orinda Warriors 21
In a super-tight game, the Cardinals pulled out a win in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI by Nico DeFazio. Highlights of the game include 2 home runs by Brian Cain, great hits by Cole Pugsley, Daniel McLaughlin, Antonio Rivera, Cormac Whitney, Dean Lopez and Hollis Williams. Max Young made all 3 outs in an inning and Chaz Whitley made a double play while at 3rd base.
Piedmont Cubs 14, Orinda Giants 9
AJ Harris made a spectacular play at the plate on a throw from Center Fielder Ben Barnes to end the game against the Orinda Giants. Harris also scored 3 runs to pace the offense. Owen Somerville had 4 hits, Owen Reilly had 2 RBI and Quintan Han scored 2 runs and made several spectacular plays at 3rd.
MUSTANG
Piedmont Polar Cats 5, Piedmont Bears 4
Despite outstanding hitting and defense by Luke Barrett, the Bears found themselves only ahead by a single run late in the game. The Polar Cats capitalized with 2 runs, thanks to a towering triple by Jake Hart. Star pitcher Abe Barnes struck out the side to end the game.
Piedmont Bears 16, Piedmont River Bandits 7
Elliott Meeks, Aaron Somer-Satue, Jackson de Melo, and Luke Barrett pitched the Bears to their fourth straight victory. Cole Canine, Eli Kleinmann, Brady Dunne, Barrett and de Melo contibuted multiple hits and runs to fuel the offense. For the River Bandits, Alex Hilton, Salem Cavanaugh, and Luca Valdez-Kaminsky provided both pitching and offensive contributions for the team.
Piedmont Tornadoes 8, Piedmont Knights 2
The Mustang Tornadoes, led by the strong pitching of Alfonso Hollingsworth, Lars Derr, Jayden Lee and Tommy Smegal, held the Knights to two runs in their late Saturday game. Hollingsworth also made a key defensive play in the fourth to cut down a Knights rally. In the third, Taylor Wong fired a perfect throw to Lars Derr at third to nail the runner trying to advance. The Tornadoes offense was led by two hits apiece from Jacob Tay and Hollingsworth. Eight different Tornadoes scored in the game. For the Knights, Will Shields and Luke Harris pitched well. Alan Rossi also scored in the fourth.
Piedmont Polar Cats 1, Piedmont Seals 2
In an extremely well played game, the Seals needed all of Milo Filler's skills. Pitching flawlessly and scoring the go ahead run on crafty base running, Milo was a one-man wrecking crew.
Piedmont Polar Cats 0. Piedmont Jedi 4
Although hampered by a steady drizzle, the Jedi were able to blank the Polar Cats on Thursday night. Outstanding defensive plays were put in by Max Wagner and Jack Anderson; Ben Levinson was simply perfect on the mound for the Jedi.
BRONCO
Piedmont Aces 15, Moraga Dodgers 5
The Piedmont Aces needed only 5 innings to take care of the Moraga Dodgers. A 5 run first inning led the charge for the Aces. Sam Von Hermann had a perfect game going through 4 innings until the Dodgers broke through. Outstanding play by Jonah Sanders at short and Sam White at second led the way for the defense. Grant Keating had two doubles for the Aces.
PONY
Piedmont Scots 6, Moraga 1
The Scots took two of three from Moraga over the weekend. In game one both Alex Paton and Jack Woolcott had two hits and one RBI. Christian Turner had a double and one RBI. Dillon Heller ended up having the game-winning RBI with a single. Paton pitched six innings allowing only one run and Turner behind the plate was responsible for six put-outs on steals and plays at the plate.
Piedmont Scots 1, Moraga 2
Game two of the series was a pitchers' duel. Moraga only allowed the Scots one run and two hits. Jacob Armstrong pitched seven innings for the Scots and allowed only two runs and four hits. Christian Turner again behind the plate threw out two base stealers. Cade Becker executed a sacrifice bunt that allowed Andrew Meredith to advance a base, which led to Armstrong's single RBI to score the only run.
Piedmont Scots 10, Moraga 0
The final game of the series provided an offensive onslaught by the Scots. Thirteen out of 14 players got hits. Sam Williamson, Chris Conn, Luke Eidam, Scott VanNess, Sam Watters all had base hits and RBIs. Bing Mitchell had a blistering shot into the right center gap, scoring two runs, while he almost pulled out the triple. Alex Robison also hit a double that scored the run to end the game. Jack Woolcott pitched six innings. allowing only three hits in the shutout.
SOFTBALL U8
Piedmont Purple Puppies 1, Oakland Knights 0
It was a pitchers' duel as Ruby Trost-Goldhammer started the game off strong for the Purple Puppies with 3 quick strikeouts. Sydney Parkhurst also struck out 3 batters in her pitching debut. Isabelle Epstein and Jillian Tiao both pitched strong in relief, blanking their Oakland opponents to a second shut-out game in the season. Mia Call had a great hit and Caroline Collins scored the only run of the game.
Piedmont Purple Puppies 8, Oakland Purple Pandas 7
Last week the Purple Puppies had 14 hits, including great at bats from Anna Jansson, Shari Lynn Halden, Maggie Sullivan and Caroline Collins and big RBI doubles from Jillian Tiao and Joyce Stern. On defense, Halden made a great play at second and Bella Hilton pitched amazingly in her first appearance, with 2 strikeouts! The Purple Puppies rallied 5 runs in the last inning to come out victorious in a very exciting game!
