What’s next?: The Highlanders play at Albany on Friday.

Bottom line: Piedmont just couldn’t hang with St. Joe’s. The Pilots were too efficient on offense and dogged on defense for Piedmont to keep up.

was outplayed on both ends of the floor Wednesday night, losing a league game to St. Joseph Notre Dame, 57-43.

The Pilots dominated the glass and played efficient and mistake-free offense to control the majority of the game.

“They are killing us on the glass,” Piedmont coach Bryan Gardere said to his team in the third quarter. “That’s the difference in the game.”

Piedmont led 18-16 after the first quarter and continued to hang with the Pilots throughout most of the second period. But a couple of late second-quarter 3-pointers gave the Pilots a 33-27 at the half. St. Joe’s continued to control the game in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 44-35 by the end of the period.

Offensively, the Pilots controlled possession and used good ball movement to find open shots. St. Joe’s limited mistakes and capitalized on the opportunities they were given. Piedmont shot fairly well and compete on defense, but they couldn’t match the Pilots’ strength inside or their skill on the perimeter.

“We got really good shots,” St. Joe’s coach Julianne Berry said. “We’re an unselfish team — sometimes even too unselfish. We have not just one player, but two, three, or four players who can score, and we work the ball around until someone got a good shot.”

Saidah Allen scored 14 points for the Highlanders. “When Saidah is aggressive, there is no one who can guard her,” Gardere said earlier this season. Lauren Seyranian also scored 14 for Piedmont, and Quincy Mann added 10. But that trio got little help.

“We know this team,” Berry said. “They know us. In a game like this, it’s all about effort.”
