Going to the Dogs

"Here he comes, here he comes, here he comes." the fluffy white tail waves an enthusiastic greeting to a man emerging from a Piedmont Avenue store.  The man bends, pats the dog on the head, unwraps the leash from the bicycle rack where it has been fastened and they walk away, the tail still wagging.
This is a common sight on Piedmont Avenue where dogs can be seen, walking or waiting, from morning to night.  The best viewing hours are from around 4 pm to 7 or so, as humans return from work and they and the pooch take off down the sidewalk for a brisk jaunt.
Big dogs, little dogs, long legs, short legs, can all be seen in a totally disorganized and multicolor parade as the legged creatures get in some exercise before dinner.  It's a dog lovers paradise.
And remarkable for other reasons, too.
How many of you have stepped in dog poop on a  Piedmont Avenue sidewalk?  Raise your hand.  As I thought.  Someone is doing a good job of training those dogs and of picking up after them.  Of course we have wonderful and dedicated volunteers who monitor the sidewalks and do early morning sweeps.  But I'm sure they'd tell you most of what they're picking up has been left by humans, not dogs.
Also, when I'm in the area, on the rare occasions when I hear sharp exchanges, they're more apt to be between people than between dogs.  I think we have a great example of human/canine coexistence in the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood.  What do you think?
