Hit the Floor and Give Me Twenty!

Piedmont students meet the state marks in fitness statistics.

 Students in the Piedmont Unified School District are in good trim physically compared to students across California.

State Superintendent Tom Torlakson this week released the 2009-2010 report on California Physical Fitness Report for grades 5, 7 and 9.

In Piedmont, the state reported totals for 201 5th-graders, 208 7th-graders and 212 9th-graders. Each grade has six activity categories.

Fifth grade

In Piedmont, 93 percent of 5th-graders hit the HFZ, or “healthy fitness zone,” for aerobic capacity, and 88 percent met the HFZ for body composition. Statewide, 65 percent of 5th-graders met the "healthy fitness zone" requirements for aerobic capacity while 69 percent hit that standard for body composition.

In Piedmont, 96 percent of 5th-graders hit the HFZ for abdominal strength, and 98 percent did in trunk extensor strength. Statewide, in abdominal strength, 80 percent of 5t- graders were in the zone while 88 percent met the goals in trunk extensor strength.

In Piedmont, 93 percent of 5th-graders hit the mark in upper body strength and 94 percent met the HFZ in flexibility. Statewide, the equivalents were 69 percent in upper body strength and 70 percent in flexibility.

Seventh grade

In Piedmont, 89 percent of 7th-graders hit the HFZ for aerobic capacity, and 81 percent did for body composition; the statewide equivalents were 67 percent for aerobic capacity and 69 percent for body composition.

In Piedmont, 94 percent of 7th-graders scored the standard in abdominal strength, and 98 percent hit the HFZ for trunk extensor strength; the state equivalents were 85 percent in abdominal strength and 90 percent in trunk extensor strength.

In Piedmont, 91 percent of 7th-graders reached the HFZ in upper body strength and 82 percent did the same in flexibility; the statewide equivalents were 93 percent in upper body strength and 78 percent in flexilibity.

Ninth grade

In Piedmont, 78 percent of 9th-graders hit the HFZ in aerobic capacity with 88 percent scoring the standard in body composition; the statewide equivalents were 64 percent in aerobic capacity and 71 percent in body composition.

In Piedmont, 89 percent of 9th-graders met the standard in abdominal strength and 92 percent achieved the HFZ in trunk extensor strength; the statewide equivalents were 98 percent in abdominal strength and 92 percent in trunk extensor strength.

In Piedmont, 81 percent of 9th-graders hit the mark in upper body strength, and only 59 percent met the HFZ in flexibility; the statewide equivalents were 77 percent in upper body strength and 82 percent in flexibility.
