Ice Cream is a Cheap Summer Treat

Cool your craving for as little as $2.25.

A serving of ice cream can be had in and around Piedmont for between $2.25 and $8.95, depending on whether you're hankering for one little scoop or three. Local shops also sell shakes, sundaes, banana splits, malts and more for about $4 to $8.50.

Manager Steve Chung calls on Lakeshore Avenue a "one-stop shop” for frozen yogurt, ice cream, smoothies and fruit shakes. A child-size Dryer’s Grand ice cream or frozen yogurt is $2.25, a small is $3.10, medium, $3.60 and a large, $4.25. The shop also sells banana splits ($6.45), sundaes ($5.25), shakes ($3.90), malts ($4.75) and floats ($3.95). In addition to homemade waffle cones, the shop’s specialty is a non-dairy fruit shake with fruit, honey and ice.

Located on Piedmont Avenue, is the godfather of local ice cream parlours—if anything, it's only become more popular after being featured in the animated film “Up.” A petite scoop of the ice cream it makes on site is $3.95 while a single is $4.95. A regular shake is $5.50 and a jumbo is $6.75. Sundaes cost between $6.50 and $8.50. Fenton's specialty is its famous black and tan sundae made with toasted almond and vanilla ice cream layered with chocolate and caramel fudge.

Down the street at , offers five flavors of Double Rainbow ice cream including coconut, strawberry and ultra chocolate. A single scoop is $2.35, a double is $3.40 and a triple is $3.75. One of Gaylord's more popular concoctions is the Espresso “Wake Up” shake, which is ice cream plus two shots of espresso and a sprinkling of espresso bean for $5.20. Gaylord's also sells shakes, malts, and two-scoop sundaes for $4.95, as well a variety of frappes and smoothies.

serves up Fenton's ice cream, including popular flavors such as coffee cookie dream, double chocolate chip and swiss milk chocolate. Mulberry’s also stocks Fentons chocolate and caramel sauces. A kid-size ice cream is $3.95 and a small for $4.95. A regular (two scoops) is $6.95 and a large (three scoops) is $8.95. Mulberry’s also sells frozen yogurt for $2.95 to $4.35 and sundaes for $6.95 to $8.95.

The on Mountain Boulevard in Montclair Village offers a single scoop of ice cream for $2.55 and a double for $4.35. Frozen yogurt costs between $2.85 and $4.85 and a waffle cone costs an additional 85 cents. Malts, shakes, sodas, root beer floats and a “tulip” sundae are $4.85. A tall sundae is $5.95 and a banana split is $7.55. The shop also sells Persian gourmet ice cream from Golnazar with flavors such as Saffron Pistachio, Creamy Rose and Double Date. The owner also makes fresh Persian soup daily, said shop employee Abby Quirk.
