Latin Jazz Vocalist to perform "Venezuela on My Mind" at the stunning Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland

Native Venezuelan Maria Marquez is a truly unique talent – a singer, composer, arranger, educator and producer – “gracefully poised between jazz and world music.” Her vocal sound and expression are reminiscent of those of French cabaret singer Edith Piaf and American jazz singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone – rich and soulful, haunting and colorful.

According to Maria, her Jazz at the Chimes concert – “Venezuela on My Mind” - will be “a rare and very special reunion of old friends.” Those include Rich Kuhns on piano and accordion, Dan Feizli on bass and Michaelle Goerlitz on percussion. They will perform songs from all of Maria’s past recordings, including many originals.

Maria was born in Caracas and began her musical career as a teenager in the late 60’s. She graduated from the esteemed Berklee College of Music where she studied composition and arranging. Moving to the Bay Area broadened her horizon into the world of jazz and Brazilian music. She has had many fertile musical collaborations over the years, has produced world and jazz radio shows, and has helped other singers learn to sing and appreciate Latin American music.

The concert at Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland on November 16 will be followed by a reception where the public can meet the Maria and the musicians, purchase CDs and enjoy refreshments.
