A Whole Lot of Squawking Going On

Greater prairie chickens, a green heron and California quail (aka PHS students) took top honors at the 47th Annual Bird Calling Contest.

Continuing the long-standing tradition begun by Leonard J. Waxdeck, the 47th annual Piedmont High School bird calling contest brought out students' inner avians Friday at the Alan Harvey Theatre.

Seven individuals and groups entertained as they acted out situations involving their selected birds and reproduced their calls.

The top three finishers will head to New York City in two weeks to perform on the Late Show with David Letterman. They are:

1st Place: Greater Prairie-Chicken, Tympanuchus cupido. Cameron Anderson, Tlalli Moya-Smith, Sheli Schacker.

2nd Place: Green Heron, Butorides virescens. Fenua Ibabao.

3rd Place: California Quail, Callipepla californica. Lawrence Ma, Wes Dunlap, Will Meredith.
