Man Charged with Murder for Accidental Shooting in Apartment Last Week

The shooting was reported last Tuesday in the 2700 block of E.C. Reems Court.

A man is facing murder charges after he allegedly admitted to accidentally shooting another man in the back of the head with a shotgun in his East Oakland apartment last week, police said. The shooting was reported at about 12:40 a.m. last Tuesday in the 2700 block of E.C. Reems Court, a short cul-de-sac off MacArthur Boulevard, according to police records.

The suspect’s father called police and said his son, 19-year-old Isaiah Powell, had accidentally shot another man, according to a probable cause statement by Oakland police Officer Kris McClain. The victim was identified by prosecutors as 18-year-old Frank Franz.

Responding officers found Franz suffering a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He died at the scene, McClain said. Powell was taken into custody and police found the shotgun he allegedly used and took it into evidence. Powell admitted to police investigators that he shot Franz while playing with the shotgun, according to McClain.
