Latest: Mystery Body Found In Intersection

The body was found in an intersection, while an unoccupied car was found on a connector ramp above.

OAKLAND, CA — Police and the California Highway Patrol are investigating a fatality that occurred this morning at 35th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, underneath Instate Highway 580 in Oakland, CHP officials said.

CHP officials said that around 4 a.m., they were notified by Oakland police of a body at the intersection of 35th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way underneath the highway.

CHP officers then located an unoccupied black Honda Civic on the eastbound I-580 to eastbound state Highway 24 connector. There were no signs of a traffic collision.

According to CHP, it is unclear if the solo vehicle and the body are connected, and CHP crews and Oakland police are currently investigating.

The latest word: the CHP is investigating this as a suicide, according to CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld. "It's high enough to be fatal if someone jumped."
