Name of Oakland Man Arrested in Bank Robbery, Hostage Incident Released

Police say Shawn McGee Sr. allegedly walked into a Safeway store in Antioch, approached a teller with a gun and demanded money.

Police have released the name of the suspect arrested in an Antioch bank robbery that ended in a hostage situation in Oakland Saturday night, according to the Oakland and Antioch police departments.

Police arrested 51-year-old Oakland resident Shawn McGee Sr. at 11:09 p.m. in the 10500 block of Topanga Drive on suspicion of multiple crimes, according to police. The crimes include robbery, burglary, terrorist threats, unlawful imprisonment and felony evading, police said. Police said no one was injured in the hostage situation and police said they recovered the money stolen from the bank. Police said McGee allegedly walked into the Safeway store on Deer Valley Road in Antioch at about 6:15 p.m., approached a teller with a gun and demanded money.

The teller allegedly gave McGee some money and McGee allegedly ran from the store, got into a vehicle and left the area on Hillcrest Avenue, according to police. Police said the vehicle went west on state Highway 4 and a pursuit ensued when Antioch police officers were unable to stop the vehicle.

The pursuit ended in Oakland with McGee allegedly running into an apartment and taking a hostage, police said. Police said the hostage escaped and officers arrested McGee.
