Oakland Fire Crew Extinguishes Fire that Started with Mattress Under Window

Fire officials say the fire caused $10,000 to $15,000 of damage to the office building.

Firefighters extinguished an office building fire in Oakland this morning that started when a mattress caught on fire outside of the building, an Oakland Fire Department Battalion Chief said. The first report of the fire in the 1100 block of 34th Street came in at 2:06 a.m., a fire dispatcher said.

The dispatcher said firefighters had the fire extinguished at 2:19 a.m. Battalion Chief Robert Lipp said neither civilians nor firefighters were injured in the one-alarm fire. Lipp said it’s always sort of interesting as to how this sort of fire gets started. The mattress was right under the window of the building and the fire broke the window and spread into an office, Lipp said. The office inside the building was neither vacant nor a retail store, Lipp said.

Lipp said there was nothing obvious to indicate the fire was set intentionally. Lipp said he estimates the fire caused $10,000 to $15,000 of damage to the office building. Firefighters put the fire out from the outside and went inside to make sure the fire was out.

“It started small and stayed small,” Lipp said. Lipp said people reported the fire right away.
