Oakland Police: Bodies Found at Homeless Encampment Underneath Freeway

The causes of the deaths are under investigation, police officials said.

Two bodies were found at a homeless encampment near Lake Merritt in Oakland Tuesday evening, a police lieutenant said.

Officers responded to a report of homeless people encamped near a parking lot under Interstate Highway 580 on Lake Park Avenue between Grand and Lakeshore avenues, police Lt. Chris Bolton said. Around 5:10 p.m., officers were en route to the scene where the bodies were discovered, Oakland police Officer J. Moore said.

Based on a preliminary investigation police do not suspect foul play was a role in the deaths, Bolton said. The causes of the deaths are under investigation, Bolton said.

Anyone who saw a man or woman in that area recently is asked to contact police, Bolton said. An Alameda County coroner’s deputy said a team had responded to the scene.
