Update: Oakland Police Officer Shot With Rifle, Suspect Killed

Update:

A 49-year-old man was shot and killed by Oakland police officers after firing a rifle and seriously injuring an officer early this morning, police Chief Sean Whent said.

Officers in uniform responded at 1:32 a.m. to the 3800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Oakland to investigate a sexual assault.

While at the scene, officers encountered the suspect armed with a rifle who shot at them, police said. One of the officers was struck by the gunfire.

Two officers returned fire, striking the suspect, police said. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released by police.

The injured officer was also taken to a hospital, where he has since undergone surgery and is in serious but stable condition, Whent said.

The chief said the officers involved in the shooting were a 14-year veteran and one-year veteran of the department.

The rifle used by the suspect was recovered from the scene and no additional suspects are being sought in the case, Whent said.

The shooting is the fourth involving Oakland police this year and the second resulting in a fatality, he said. The case remains under investigation by the department’s homicide section and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. One person is dead and an Oakland police officer is in stable condition this morning following a confrontation involving a rifle.

While at the scene, the officers encountered a suspect armed with a rifle. The suspect allegedly shot one of the officers, police said.

The two officers returned fire, striking the suspect, according to police.

The injured officer and the suspect were both taken to a hospital. The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The officer remained in stable condition as of 5 a.m. this morning, according to police. According to the Oakland Tribune, the officer has undergone surgery.

Officers were able to recover the rifle from the scene and are continuing to investigate the incident, police said.
